First off, I have to give them credit for the name. Breaking Bread, a clever little play on Breaking Bad, complete with a logo inspired by the TV series. I’m a sucker for a good play on words, so they already had my attention before I’d even looked at the menu!

First impressions…

The space is cosy, with emerald green, gold accents, timber finishes and indoor plants giving it a really nice feel. Big windows at the front let in plenty of natural light, even on an overcast day.

There’s a handful of tables if you want to sit in, plus a little waiting area for takeaways. Nothing overly fancy, just a comfortable, welcoming space.

Tucked away in one of the little dining nooks is a shelf full of handmade crafts and quirky bits and pieces for sale. There are also some rather neat handmade banjos hanging on the wall.

Turns out they’re made by Ben, who also happens to be the bloke behind that delicious focaccia! And yes, the banjos are for sale too.

Clearly a man of many talents! From making music to making bread, not a bad combination really.

But what I really liked was the atmosphere created by the people working there.

It’s a small team running the shop, welcoming customers as they come in, saying goodbye as they leave, and chitchatting and laughing about their own lives behind the counter. Nothing forced or put on for the customers, just people going about their day, having a laugh and enjoying a bit of banter while they work.

At one point, the man behind the bread even came out carrying a tray of fresh focaccia, straight from the oven, golden and crunchy. Now that’s one way to get someone’s attention!

It’s those little things that make a place feel genuinely welcoming. No acting, no over-the-top customer service, just real people doing their thing.

Now, let’s talk about that toastie! 🥪

I ordered the No. 3 Toastie ($16) with house-made focaccia, pastrami, tasty cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing.

And can we just talk about that focaccia for a second?!

Fresh off the grill, steaming hot, beautifully toasted with a lovely golden crust. It had that slightly oily richness you expect from a good focaccia, but not in a bad way at all. Quite the opposite, actually!

The filling was generous, the size was spot on and there was plenty of flavour going on. But what I really liked was that nothing was trying to outshine anything else. Everything just worked together.

Onto the coffee… ☕

I went with a large pumpkin spice iced latte with cheesecake cold foam ($10), thanks to the barista’s recommendation.

Probably should have gone with a smaller size, because they do offer different sizes. But rookie move, I just ordered without asking how big it was going to be!

Initially, I couldn’t really taste much of the pumpkin spice and thought perhaps it was all sitting at the bottom. Turns out, it just needed a good mix!

Once I’d stirred everything together, the flavours really came through. The pumpkin spice is lovely, not overpowering or overly sweet, just a really nice balance.

And that cheesecake cold foam? Such a nice touch! It reminds me of cream cheese frosting on a pumpkin cake. The two flavours work beautifully together, and it almost feels like you’re drinking a dessert.

It’s quite rich and filling, but in a good way. Definitely one to take your time with.

They also have a variety of specialty cold foams you can add to your coffee, which I thought was a nice touch. Something a little different from your usual coffee order.

What else is on the menu?

It’s not a huge menu, but there’s definitely enough to make choosing difficult.

Fresh bagels with sweet and savoury options, sandwiches and toasties, all with combinations that sound equally delicious.

There are also fresh, hot pastries sitting in a little oven on the counter, ready to tempt you while you’re ordering. And if you’re a bagel fan, you can grab a six-pack of fresh bagels to take home, which I thought was a great idea.

They also mention catering on the menu, and if you’re vegan or vegetarian, just ask. Apparently they’re happy to whip something up to suit, which is good to know.

I actually don’t mind a smaller menu. Sometimes it’s nice not having to scroll through a hundred different options just to decide what you’re eating!

And the pricing? 💰

Pretty reasonable, I thought!

$16 for a generously filled, freshly made toastie and $10 for a large specialty iced coffee.

So $26 all up, which these days really isn’t too bad.

I mean, I paid $15 for a smaller coffee in Melbourne just last week! So I’m certainly not complaining about this one.

Especially considering how filling both were. I definitely didn’t walk away hungry.

So, will I be back?

Yep, absolutely!

There’s still plenty more on that menu I want to work my way through, and if the other options are anything like that focaccia, I’m keen to see what else they’re serving up.

Good food, friendly staff, a cosy little space and prices that don’t make you wince. Add in a team that genuinely seems to enjoy what they’re doing, and it’s a pretty good combination in my books! 💚
